Origin: A borrowing from Assamese. Etymon: Assamese Mishmi.

Etymology: < Assamese Mishmi, of uncertain origin. Compare Miri n.² and adj.The term is apparently offensive to the Mishmis themselves, who distinguish at least four separate subgroups (with self-designations Kaman, Taruang, Idu, and Midu) and speak a number of closely related but mutually unintelligible languages.

1. A member of a hill-dwelling people inhabiting Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Assam in north-eastern India. Frequently attributive.
