Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymons: Russian mirjačit, mirjačit′.
Etymology: < Russian regional (Siberia) mirjačit (also transliterated miryachit), 3rd person singular of mirjačit′ to have the falling sickness, lit. ‘to be possessed by an evil spirit’ (1842) < mirjak evil spirit, later extended to mean ‘person with miryachit’.According to V. Dal′ Tolkovyj slovar′ živogo velikorusskogo jazyka (1881) at mir, the condition was known in Russian as mirjačestvo and an attack began with a convulsive fit, after which the patient began to mimic the speech and actions of others.
Psychiatry. Now historical.
A syndrome characterized by echolalia and echopraxia in response to a sudden stimulus, observed in Siberia and variously regarded as a psychiatric disorder or as an exaggerated or abnormal startle response. Cf. lata n.
