单词 badiaga
释义

badiagan.

Brit. /bəˈdjɑːɡə/, /badɪˈɑːɡə/, U.S. /ˌbædiˈɑɡə/, /bəˈdjɑɡə/
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Russian. Etymons: Latin Badiaga; Russian bodjaga.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin and scientific Latin Badiaga, genus name (J. C. Buxbaum 1728, in Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperialis Petropolitanae 2 343–7), and its etymon (ii) Russian bodjaga, †badjaga freshwater sponge (apparently a1728 or earlier, though not recorded in dictionaries of the language before 1780), cognate with Polish (regional) bodzięga , Ukrainian bodjaga , Belarusian badzjaga , < the Slavonic base of Old Church Slavonic bosti to stab (see fodient adj. and n.) + the Slavonic base of Russian -jaga, suffix forming nouns. The plant is apparently so named on account of the stinging sensation it produces when coming into contact with a person's skin.
A preparation of dried and powdered freshwater sponges of various species, formerly used (in Russia and parts of Eastern Europe) in making traditional medicines and cosmetics, and later in homeopathic remedies. In some early sources misidentified as an alga.
