Forms: Middle English mesanter, Middle English mesauntir, Middle English mesauntre, Middle English mesaunture, Middle English messantoure, Middle English messanture, Middle English messauntere, Middle English messauntre, Middle English misanter, Middle English misantour, Middle English misauntour, Middle English misauntre, Middle English misaunture, Middle English misawnter, Middle English missaunter, Middle English mysaunter, Middle English mysauntre, Middle English mysawnter, Middle English mysawntre, late Middle English maysauntour, late Middle English myssauntour, 1800s– misaunter (English regional (northern)); Scottish 1700s 1900s– misanter, 1800s– messanter, 1900s– misantir. See also mishanter n.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: misadventure n.
Etymology: Originally a variant of misadventure n. with elision of the vowel of the third syllable (perhaps under the influence of stress on the second syllable: early metrical evidence suggests variable stress for this word), subsequently restricted to regional use. Compare adventure n. and variant forms s.v., and see also mishanter n.
Now Scottish and English regional (northern).
= misadventure n.
