Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mis- prefix1, English beholden , behold v.
Etymology: < mis- prefix1 + beholden, past participle of behold v. Compare beholden adj. The original meaning seems to have been ‘improperly guarded, unguarded’; compare Old English behealdan to hold, guard, contain, be cautious.
Chiefly British regional (Scottish, northern, and eastern English). Now rare.
Esp. of a word: disrespectful, indiscreet; disobliging, impolite.
