Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: French badineur ; French badiner , -eur suffix.
Etymology: Either (i) < French badineur (although this is first attested later: 1866; < badiner badiner v. + -eur -eur suffix), or independently (ii) < French badiner badiner v. + -eur suffix. Compare earlier badiner v., badinage n., badinerie n., badine n. N.E.D. (1885) gives the pronunciation as (badinö·r) /badiˈnœːr/.
Obsolete.
A person who indulges in badinage or raillery; a banterer.
