Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by conversion. Or perhaps (iii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French mixter ; mixed adj.2; English mixt , mix v.
Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman mixter, myxter (15th cent. in a source cited by F. Godefroy Dict. de l'ancienne langue française (1880 1902); < mixte mixed adj.2), or independently < mixed adj.2, or perhaps inferred as present stem corresponding to mixt, past participle of mix v. (perhaps compare cleft v., heft v.1). Compare Middle Dutch mixteren , mixteeren ( < classical Latin mixtus mixed adj.2). Compare earlier commixt v.See quot. 1538 at mix v. 1a for variation between myxe and myxt, myxte as infinitive in different 16th-cent. editions of a single work.
