Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mixteca.
Etymology: < Spanish mixteca (1541; also 1545 asmisteca ) < Nahuatl mixtecah , lit. ‘people from a cloudy location’. Compare Italian Mixtechi , plural (1780 in the passage translated in quot. 1787 at sense A. 1).The Mixteca is frequently used as the name of the region in western Oaxaca where this people lives. The form Mizteca in quot. 1870 at sense A. 1 is not attested in Spanish.
