Etymology: < German Molinia ( F. von Paula von Schrank Baiersche Flora (1789) I. 100) < the name of Juan Ignacio Molina (1740–1829), Chilean naturalist + -ia -ia suffix¹.

Botany.

A genus of perennial densely tufted grasses typically having long, narrow panicles; (also molinia) a grass of this genus, spec. Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea, purple moor grass, plentiful over large areas of damp peaty moorland in Eurasia.
