Designating or relating to any of various biochemical tests for the presence of sugars, carbohydrates, or proteins in solution, in which α-naphthol (or for sugars, α-naphthol or thymol) reacts with the substance in the presence of sulphuric acid to give a violet colour (with α-naphthol) or a red one (with thymol).
