Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin absit.
Etymology: < classical Latin absit let (him or her) be absent, 3rd singular present subjunctive of abesse to be absent (see absent adj.). Compare earlier exeat n. 2.
Originally Cambridge University.
A notice granting temporary absence (originally for a day or part of a day) to a university student or a pupil at a boarding school. Cf. exeat n. 2.
