Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -phonic comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -phonic comb. form. Compare ancient Greek μονόϕωνος with one voice or tone (see later monophonous adj.). Compare earlier polyphonic adj.In quot. 1828 at sense 1 Du Ponceau refers to J. P. A. Rémusat Recherces sur les Langues Tartares (1820); Rémusat does not use a cognate of monophonic . In sense 2 after German einstimmig (1842 in the passage translated in quot. 1852 at sense 2).
