Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combining with English elements. Etymons: Latin monopteros , -al suffix1; mono- comb. form, Greek πτερόν.
Etymology: In sense A. 1 < classical Latin monopteros (see monopteros n.) + -al suffix1. In sense A. 2 < mono- comb. form + ancient Greek πτερόν (see ptero- comb. form) + -al suffix1. Compare French monoptère (1547 in Middle French in sense A. 1: see monopter n.). Compare dipteral adj.
