单词 mizpah
释义

Mizpahint.adj.

Brit. /ˈmɪzpə/, U.S. /ˈmɪzpə/
Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew Miṣpāh.
Etymology: < Hebrew Miṣpāh, the name of the cairn erected by Laban and Jacob as a sign of their association, a wordplay (interpretable as ‘outlook-point’; compare Hebrew miṣpeh watchtower) on the verb ṣapāh to watch, used in their agreement ‘The Lord watch (Hebrew yiṣēp) between me and thee’ (i.e. to ensure the keeping of the covenant) (Genesis 31:49).The word occurs in the titles of a number of literary works, songs, and musical compositions, as well as printed ephemera, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mostly alluding to the theme of fidelity. The interpretation of the word as ‘watchtower’ has led to its use as a motto of adventist groups; compare:1887 Mizpah 21 Feb. 7 A deeper, more mysteriously beautiful meaning than appears at first sight, is comprehended in the word ‘Mizpah’—light within light, circle within circle, revelation within revelation.1887 Mizpah 21 Feb. 19 It is our duty to examine from the Tower of Mizpah this wonderful Advent of Divinity.
