Etymology: < post-classical Latin Mnium ( J. J. Dillenius Historia Muscorum (1741) 232) < Hellenistic Greek μνίον seaweed, of unknown origin.
A genus of mosses of the family Mniaceae (order Bryales), whose members have broad, sometimes reddish leaves and often drooping capsules, and are found throughout much of the northern hemisphere; (also mnium) a moss of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: J. Hedwig Species Muscorum (1801) 188 (nomen conservandum).

1754 New & Compl. Dict. Arts & Sci. III. 2096/1 Mnium, in botany, a genus of mosses..producing capsules raised on pedicles, like those of the other mosses of this class; but besides these, there are other pedicles, bearing a kind of naked heads, with a dusty surface, and having no calyptræ.
