单词 mongoose
释义

mongoosen.

Brit. /ˈmɒŋɡuːs/, /ˈmʌŋɡuːs/, U.S. /ˈmɑŋˌɡus/
Inflections: Plural mongooses, (irregular) mongeese, (irregular) mongoose, (irregular) mongooze.
Forms:

α. 1600s mounggoutia, 1600s– mongoose, 1700s mongoes, 1700s mungose, 1700s–1800s mongoos, 1700s–1800s mongooz (in sense 2), 1700s–1800s mongoz, 1700s–1800s mungos, 1700s– mungoos, 1800s mongous (in sense 2), 1800s moongus, 1800s mungous, 1800s– mungoose.

β. 1700s–1800s mangoost, 1700s–1800s mangoust, 1800s mangouste.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Partly a borrowing from Marathi. Etymons: Portuguese mangus; Marathi maṅgūs.
Etymology: < (i) Portuguese mangus (1716; 1685 in form mongús) and its etymon (ii) Marathi maṅgūs, muṅgūs < Telugu muṅgisa , Kannada muṅgisi . The β. forms are after French mangouste (1703, with insertion of -t- through hypercorrection; 1696 in form mangouze ). Compare mungo n.1With the form mounggoutia in quot. 1681 at sense 1α. compare Sinhala mugatiya the brown mongoose, Herpestes fucus. Sense 2 is possibly a distinct word; but no source has been found for it in Malagasy or any other language of the Indian Ocean, and it may be a transferred use of the name of Herpestes ichneumon, the Egyptian mongoose. In earlier use in this sense the prevailing forms are mongous and mongooz ; compare French mongous (see quot. 1758 at sense 2). According to N.E.D. (1907), ‘the proper plural form is mongooses , but mongoose , mongeese , and other variants are occasionally used’ (in form mongeese after goose n.). Mongooses is the usual modern plural form, but compare e.g.:1971 F. Collymore in J. Figueroa Caribbean Voices I. 81 The mongoose..is a troublesome sort of creature... For nobody seems to know with any degree of certainty which to choose of his plural forms—mongooses, mongeese, mongoose or mongooze. The evidence of contemporary dictionaries suggests that the most usual British pronunciation in the 19th cent. had /ʌ/ in the first syllable. Editions of D. Jones Eng. Pronouncing Dict. give this as the first pronunciation until the mid 20th cent. (later editions give it as an alternative). Earlier editions of Jones give priority to forms with the stress on the second syllable, though other evidence for this is lacking. Some 19th-cent. dictionaries also enter the word under the spelling mungoose (e.g. the Imperial Dict. (1881)) or mungoos (e.g. the Encyclopædic Dict. (1885)). N.E.D. (1907) enters the word under Mongoose, mungoose, with corresponding pronunciations. Cent. Dict. (1890) enters it under the double form mongoos, mungoos, with corresponding pronunciations, but other U.S. dictionaries of the late 19th cent. prioritize the o-spelling and the corresponding pronunciation.
