Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mollin.
Etymology: < German Mollin (attributed to T. Canz by T. A. Kirsten in Monatshefte f. praktische Dermatologie (1886) 5 278) < classical Latin mollis soft (see moll adj.) + German -in -ine suffix5. Perhaps compare earlier moelline n.Kirsten reports that Canz originally called the substance Sapo mollis ‘soft soap’ ( < classical Latin sāpō soap + mollis soft).
Medicine. Now rare.
A kind of superfatted soft soap containing glycerine, sometimes used as a base for dermatological ointments.

1907 W. A. Pusey Princ. & Pract. Dermatol. i. 149 Mollin is a soft soap with which about seventeen per cent of free fat is incorporated.
