Etymology: < moat n.1 + -ing suffix1. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mōu·tiŋ) /ˈməʊtɪŋ/.
Mining (chiefly Scottish). Obsolete.
The watertight lining of clay or puddling added around the stonework of a mineshaft that has been built up through a bed of quicksand.
