Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Molossus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Molossus molossus n. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Molossus (see molossid n. and adj.). Compare Middle French, French molosse (1555 in sense 3, 1611 in Cotgrave in sense 1, 1817 in sense 2), Italian molosso (a1556 in sense 2).N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (molǫ·s) /məʊˈlɒs/.
