Etymology: < Japanese monogatari tale (10th cent.; 1603 in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam; attested 720 as monokatari in Nihon-shoki, the Chronicles of Japan) < mono thing, object, affair + -gatari, combining form of katari, nominalized stem of kataru to talk (about), tell, narrate, recite (probably < kata shape, form).The word is found earlier in English context in the Japanese titles of works in this genre. Compare:1727 J. G. Scheuchzer in tr. E. Kæmpfer Hist. Japan (1993) I. p. lxxxiv I have met with the Titles of some [works by Japanese writers] in Dr. Kæmpfer's manuscript memoirs..Feeki mono Gattari: A Discourse of the affairs of the Feeki's..Osacca mono Gattari: a Discourse of the affairs of the Osacca.
In Japan: a tale, story, or narrative; esp. a legend, a romance.Monogatari as a literary genre flourished between the 9th and 14th centuries in Japan; in modern use, the term refers to stories modelled on the Japanese narrative tradition rather than the Western novel.
