Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, Greek γυνή.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + ancient Greek γυνή woman, female (see -gynous comb. form), after French monogyne, noun (c1817 in sense A. 1 in C. Fourier Nouveau monde amoureux in Théorie des quatre mouvements (1967) 252/2), and adjective (1787 in sense ‘having one pistil, style, or stigma’; 1926 or earlier in entomology).
