Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, Greek οἶκος.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + ancient Greek οἶκος house (see oecist n.), after scientific Latin Monoica, former subclass name (H. M. D. de Blainville Man. de malacologie et de conchyliologie (1825) 447), itself after earlier monoicus , specific epithet used in botany (Linnaeus Species Plantarum (ed. 2, 1763) II. 1023): see Monoecia n. N.E.D. (1907) included this with monoid adj.1 and n.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
Of an animal: hermaphrodite; (originally) spec. of, relating to, or designating molluscs of the former subclass Monoica.
