单词 babiana
释义

Babianan.

Brit. /ˌbabɪˈɑːnə/, U.S. /ˌbæbiˈænə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Babiana.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Babiana (J. B. Ker Gawler: see quot. 1801) < South African Dutch babianer , in same sense ( < Dutch †babiaen baboon n. + -er -er suffix1; compare Afrikaans bobbejaantjie, literally ‘little baboon’, and bobbejaanuintjie, literally ‘baboon bulb’, both in same sense); compare -a suffix1. The South African Dutch and Afrikaans names were given to the plants because their subterranean stems are eaten by baboons. N.E.D. (1885) also gives the pronunciation (bæbiˌēi·nă) /bæbɪˈeɪnə/.
A genus of southern African plants of the family Iridaceae, comprising spring-flowering perennial plants which grow from corms and produce spikes of funnel-shaped yellow, purple, or scarlet flowers. Also (usually in form babiana): a plant of this genus.
