Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French babillard.
Etymology: Apparently < French babillard (adjective) talkative (1555 in Middle French; often applied to birds, e.g. in fauvette babillarde , literally ‘talkative whitethroat’, a name of the lesser whitethroat (1756 or earlier)) < babiller to chatter (see babble v.1) + -ard -ard suffix. Compare French babillard (noun) chatterer, talkative person (16th cent. in Middle French), (regional: Arbois) denoting the whitethroat ( Sylvia communis), use as noun of babillard , adjective. Compare babbler n. 4. N.E.D. (1885) gives the pronunciations as (babilyā·r, bæ·bilaɹd) /babɪˈʎɑːr/ /ˈbæbɪlɑːd/.

1831 J. Rennie Montagu's Ornithol. Dict. (ed. 2) 15 Babillard (Curruca garrula, Brisson.)... As this species has been so strangely confounded by British naturalists with the white-throat, I have been induced to substitute a foreign name for the inappropriate appellation of the lesser white-throat.
1852 Kidd's Own Jrnl. 16 Oct. 244/1 The babillard is in appearance very like the Peggy Whitethroat (Curruca cinerea).
1889 J. Watson Sylvan Folk 202 Babillard and babbling-warbler are provincial—in some cases specific—names which attach to it, these having been bestowed from the fact of a soft gurgling whistle which it sometimes emits.
