单词 mocha
释义

Mochan.1

Brit. /ˈmɒkə/, /ˈməʊkə/, U.S. /ˈmoʊkə/
Forms: 1600s Mocus, 1600s moko, 1700s Mocho, 1700s Mochoa, 1700s Mochoe, 1700s Moco, 1700s Mocoe, 1700s–1800s Mocoa, 1700s– Mocha, 1900s– Mocca. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mocha.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably < the name of Mocha, a port in Yemen (see mocha n.2 and compare note below). Compare German Mokkastein, Mochastein, French pierre de Mocka (1765), Spanish piedra de moca (1884), perhaps after English.Parts of inland Yemen are rich sources of agate and other decorative stones. From the 16th to the 19th cent. (before the development of the port of Aden), Mocha was the major seaport of this area, and developed close commercial contact with Europe. It was probably the source from which Europeans first directly obtained the decorative stone products of central Yemen. The form Mocus in quot. 1679 at sense 1 is unexplained; it may arise simply from misapprehension of word boundaries in the compound Mocha stone in spoken use. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (mōu·kă) /ˈməʊkə/. The pronunciation has been influenced in Britain by that of the more common mocha n.2
1. Moss agate or a similar form of chalcedony with dendritic markings, often used to make jewellery, etc. More fully Mocha pebble, Mocha stone.

3. In full Mocha ware. A type of English pottery made from the late 18th to the early 20th cent., having a white or cream body decorated with coloured bands displaying branching, tree-like patterns. Now also: similar ware made by studio potters. The characteristic dendritic patterns associated with Mocha ware result from the chemical interaction of alkaline slip and a mildly acidic infusion of tobacco. The ware is dried to a leather-hard state and dipped upside down into finely sieved slip. The tobacco infusion (originally made using a mixture of turpentine and urine) is then painted on with swift brushstrokes.

mochan.2adj.

Brit. /ˈmɒkə/, /ˈməʊkə/, U.S. /ˈmoʊkə/
Forms: 1700s Mocco, 1700s Mochea, 1700s– Mocha, 1800s Mochá, 1800s Moka, 1900s– Mocca. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: From a proper name; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: proper name Mocha.
Etymology: < the name of Mocha (18th cent. as Mocho ) a port in Yemen (Arabic al-Muḵā ), near the entrance of the Red Sea, perhaps via French caffé de Moka (1751 in sense A. 1a, also 1762 as moca , 1767 as moka ; 1879 in sense ‘cake flavoured with coffee or chocolate’). With sense A. 1a, compare Italian moca (1858), Portuguese moca (1873). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (mōu·kă) /ˈməʊkə/. Although this remains the normal pronunciation elsewhere, in Britain it was superseded from the 1970s onwards by the pronunciation /ˈmɒkə/, apparently after Italian moca.
