Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese mochi.
Etymology: < Japanese mochi rice paste, rice cake (13th cent.; 1603 in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < earlier motii rice paste < motifi , probably < a base with the sense ‘to stick, adhere’ + an old form of ii cooked rice. Compare omochi n.
In Japan: a cake made from glutinous rice, steamed and pounded, sometimes with the addition of other ingredients. Also (more fully mochi rice): the rice used to make this.Mochi are traditionally eaten at New Year in Japan.

Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi mocī.
Etymology: < Hindi mocī, perhaps of Iranian origin (compare Middle Persian mōč , mōčak shoe ( > Armenian mučak small shoe)). Compare late Sanskrit mocika shoemaker. The α. forms probably reflect Tamil mucci or Telugu mucce ( < Hindi or another North Indian vernacular).
In South Asia: a member of a Scheduled Caste of leather-workers; a shoemaker, a cobbler, (formerly) a saddler. Cf. chamar n.
