Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Molucca , bean n.
Etymology: < Molucca (see Molucca n.) + bean n.Apparently originally so called on account of the beans being thought to prove the existence of a north-east or north-west passage to the Indies. In sense 2 by confusion with Malacca bean n. at Malacca n. 2a, apparently after similar confusion in Portuguese of fava de moloqua with fava de malaca.
1. Any of several kinds of tropical seed found stranded on beaches, esp. in western Europe; spec. that of either of two leguminous trees, the yellow nicker, Caesalpinia bonduc, and the sword-bean, Entada gigas (both of the family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)). Also: a tree bearing such a seed.

1965 Austral. Encycl. I. 468/2 Molucca bean (Caesalpinia crista) has very prickly pods and almost spherical white seeds which have been used medicinally in India.

2. The Malacca bean or marking nut, Semecarpus anacardium. Obsolete. rare.

1753 Chambers's Cycl. Suppl. Anacardium, the Portuguese denominate it Fava de Malaqua, the Molucca bean, by which title it is also known in England.
