Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French babord, bâbord.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French babord, (rare) babort (1484; French bâbord ) < Middle Dutch bakboord (see back-board n.). In later use perhaps reborrowed < French bâbord. Compare Swedish babord (1692).
Nautical (originally Scottish).
The port side of a ship. Cf. back-board n. 1.In later use chiefly in French contexts; opposed to tribord.
