Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Monotremata.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Monotremata, order name (in form Monotrymata attributed in G. Fischer Zoognosia Tabulis Synopticus Illustrata (ed. 3, 1813) I. 16/4 to E. Geoffroy St-Hilaire, although Geoffroy St-Hilaire appears only to have used French monotrème : see monotreme n. and adj.) < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + τρηματ- , τρῆμα hole, orifice (see trematode adj. and n.). Compare earlier monotremous adj.
Zoology.
With plural agreement. The single order of mammals included in the subclass Prototheria, comprising egg-laying mammals which which have a common opening for the urogenital and digestive systems; animals of this order (collectively or individually), monotremes.The only extant members of the order are the platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus) and the two species of echidna. They are now restricted to Australia and New Guinea.
