Origin: A borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: French monotype , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < French monotype (see monotype n. and note at that entry) + -ous suffix. Compare slightly later monotypic adj.R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) gives a Latin form monotypus. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mǫ̆nǫ·tipəs) /məˈnɒtɪpəs/.
Taxonomy. Obsolete. rare.
Designating a taxon whose subordinate taxa closely resemble one another. Also: = monotypic adj. 1b.

(1860) Monotypus, applied by Mirbel to genera, as the Rosa, and to Families, as the Labieæ, composed of one union of objects intimately joined by a multitude of relations perceptible at first glance; applied by de Candolle to genera which contain but a single species: monotypous.
1891 New Sydenham Soc. Lexicon Monotypous, of one type. Applied to genera the species of which are very similar, and form a distinct type.
