Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, binovular adj.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -ovular (in binovular adj.), perhaps after French monoovulaire (L. Cuénot 1903, in Comptes rendus de la Soc. de Biol. 55 1392). Compare earlier multiovular adj. at multi- comb. form 1a, uniovular adj. at uni- comb. form 1a.

1. Producing one ovum (per follicle or oestrous cycle).
