Etymology: < Middle French, French monseigneur, plural messeigneurs (1216 in Old French; 1160–74 in form mon seignor as an honorific title of a saint) < mon my + seigneur seigneur n. Compare slightly later monsignor n. For the corresponding French plural form see messeigneurs n.Quot. a1592 at sense 1a represents the speech of a French speaker. With forms in moun- compare discussion s.v. mounseer n.; in forms with medial -t- probably after mount n.1 and French mont (see mount n.1). Forms in -senior are probably after senior adj. and n. Compare also form monsigneur s.v. monsignor n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the non-naturalized pronunciations singular (moṅsęnyör) /mɔ̃sɛnjœr/, plural (męsęnyör) /mɛsɛnjœr/.
