Etymology: < Italian monsignore (13th cent.; preceding a name usually in form Monsignor ) < French monseigneur monseigneur n., with remodelling after signore , signor signor n.The form monsigneur is after French monseigneur.
Roman Catholic Church.
1. Chiefly with capital initial. An honorific title of, or form of address to, a Roman Catholic of ecclesiastical rank, as a prelate, archbishop, etc., indicating a distinction bestowed by the Pope, sometimes in conjunction with an office. (Usually preceding a surname, and sometimes also a first name, or occasionally a designation of office). Abbreviated Mgr., Msgr. Cf. monseigneur n.
