单词 baby cake
释义

baby caken.

Brit. /ˈbeɪbɪ keɪk/, U.S. /ˈbeɪbi ˌkeɪk/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: baby n., baby adj., cake n.
Etymology: < baby n. + cake n. In sense 2 perhaps also partly < baby adj. + cake n.
1. Either of two cakes traditionally eaten during the Christmas season: (a) a large cake into which a bean, coin, or other token is inserted which confers upon the recipient of the serving containing it the status of king or queen of the feast; = Twelfth-cake n.; (b) a small cake or biscuit formed into the shape of a person; = yule-dough n. at yule n. Compounds 1b. Now historical and rare.In quot. a1637 referring to a character representing a twelfth-cake in a Christmas masque. The precise sense in quot. 1825 is uncertain, but the context (an account of a 16th-cent. Christmas celebration) suggests that yule-doughs are more likely than simply small cakes (cf. sense 2).
