Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Modena.

Etymology: < Modena (Italian Modena , classical Latin Mutina ), the name of a city and province in northern Italy. Compare slightly earlier Modenese n.The use of carrier pigeons at Modena (see sense 3) dates from antiquity: during the siege of the city by Mark Antony this means of communication was used between Brutus and the consul Hirtius (Frontinus Strategemata 3. 13. 8). In sense 2, perhaps ultimately after post-classical use of classical Latin Mutinēnsis to denote a colour, perhaps a shade of grey or purple (1528 in an Italian source: see Modenese n. and adj.).
