Etymology: < a Yokuts name for the Monache and the Owens Valley Paiute, e.g. Wikchamni moná′či. Compare earlier Mono n.1The Monache self-designation is nɨmmɨ person, people.
1. A member of any of at least six Numic-speaking Northern Uto-Aztecan peoples (see quot. 1978) living west of the Sierra Nevada crest in central California; also called Mono or Western Mono (see Mono n.1 1). Also: a member of the Owens Valley Paiute, living east of the Sierras.
