Etymology: < classical Latin modificāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of modificāre (see modify v.), perhaps after modification n. Compare earlier modificator n., and also earlier modify v.
Obsolete.
transitive. To modify; to limit, restrict. Also: to distinguish with a specific mode of being or specific characteristics; to differentiate into various modes or forms of existence.
