Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori moeone.
Etymology: < Maori moeone bass.
New Zealand.
The wreckfish or stone bass, Polyprion americanus (family Polyprionidae or Serranidae), a large marine food fish of temperate waters. Also called New Zealand bass.

1921 N.Z. Jrnl. Sci. & Technol. 4 114 Polyprion... Bass; Moeone. Generally to be secured in deeper water than the groper.
1956 D. H. Graham Treasury N.Z. Fishes (ed. 2) 224 Bass Groper (Moeone)... This large fish was at one time thought to be the well-known Groper or Hapuku but it is now known to be specifically different. It is wider and deeper in the body. It also has larger eyes and bigger scales.
1963 Evening Post (Wellington, N.Z.) 30 Nov. 29/5 The true groper or hapuku has narrower jaws, a more pointed head and much more slender body than the sea bass or moeone.
1981 J. C. Wilson N.Z. Fisherman's Bible 32 The Maori name ‘Moeone’ is frequently used for this fish [sc. bass] which can grow up to almost two metres.
