单词 moeso-gothic
释义

Moeso-Gothicn.adj.

Brit. /ˌmiːsəʊˈɡɒθɪk/, /ˌmiːzəʊˈɡɒθɪk/, U.S. /ˌmizoʊˈɡɑθɪk/, /ˌmisoʊˈɡɑθɪk/
Forms: 1700s– Moeso-Gothic, 1800s Maeso-Gothic, 1800s Moeso-Gothick.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Moesogothicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Moesogothicus (1689 in title of G. Hickes Institutiones Grammaticæ Anglo-Saxonicæ et Mœso-Gothicæ) < classical Latin Moesī (see Moesian n.) + post-classical Latin Gothicus Gothic adj.
Now rare.
A. n.
The language of the Moeso-Goths.Formerly applied to the language of the extant Gothic version of portions of the Scriptures, the work of the Moeso-Gothic bishop Ulfilas (Gothic Wulfila, c311–382). However, as these texts represent by far the largest proportion of Gothic to survive, and as the language of the other remains is not at all distinctive, it is now usual to describe all the extant texts simply as ‘Gothic’.
