Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin monasterium monk's cell, monastery (4th cent.) < Byzantine Greek μοναστήριον monk's cell, monastery (4th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek μονάζειν to live alone ( < ancient Greek μόνος (see mono- comb. form) + -άζειν , suffix forming verbs from nouns or adjectives) + -τήριον , suffix forming nouns. In β. forms via Middle French monastere (1279 in Old French; also monasteri (13th cent.), monesteri (15th cent.)). Compare Old Occitan monestiri (12th cent.), Spanish monasterio (1030), Italian monastero (1231 as monesteri ), Portuguese †monesteiro (mid 14th cent.). Compare minster n.
