Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin monaulos, monaulus.
Etymology: < classical Latin monaulos (also monaulus) < ancient Greek μόναυλος < μονο- mono- comb. form + αὐλός pipe (see aulos n.). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (mǫnǭ·lǫs) /mɒnˈɔːlɒs/.

1776 C. Burney Gen. Hist. Music I. 202 The Greeks..unanimously confess, that most of the ancient musical instruments were of Egyptian invention: as the triangular lyre, the monaulos, or single flute; the tymbal..and the sistrum.

1877 Atlantic Monthly July 25 The Grecian pipe (aulos) was blown at the end, had a reed, and may be considered as a clarinet. It was single (monaulos) or double (diaulos).
1984 New Grove Dict. Musical Instruments II. 350/1 at Kalamos Apuleius noted an oblicus (obliquus) calamus which..was used in the worship of Isis. This was probably the monaulos, which had a reed mouthpiece set into the single tube at an angle.
