Etymology: < German Monchiquit (M. Hunter & H. Rosenbusch 1890, in Tschermak's mineral. u. petrogr. Mittheilungen 11 447) < the name of the Serra de Monchique , a mountain range in southern Portugal where this kind of rock is found + -it -ite suffix¹.

Geology.

A lamprophyre containing small phenocrysts of olivine and augite, and usually also biotite or an amphibole, in a glassy groundmass consisting of or containing analcite.
