Etymology: < Japanese mondō, lit. ‘dialogue, catechesis’ (13th cent. in Buddhist use; 1603 as mondǒ in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam, earlier as monda(f)u) < Middle Chinese.The elements of the Japanese compound are equivalent to mon question + -dō, combining form of -tō answer.
Zen Buddhism.
An instructional technique consisting of a rapid dialogue of questions and answers between master and pupil.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mondo.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mondo (1763), former genus name < Japanese mondō (1712, now only in bakumondō: see note below) < mon gate + -dō, combining form of -tō winter, found in certain plant names of Chinese origin; both elements < Middle Chinese.Japanese bakumondō (c900; 1603 as bacumondo in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) is < baku wheat + mondō, and is equivalent to modern Chinese màiméndōng. The Japanese forms are first recorded in the following quotation:1712 E. Kæmpfer Amœnitatum Exoticarum v. 823 Mondo & Biakf Mondo, vulgò Rĭuno Fige, Sĭogei Fige, Jamásuje & Sogaiì. Gramen flore hexapetaloide spicato, Radice fibrosâ & tuberosâ.
In full mondo grass. Any of various plants constituting the Japanese and East Asian genus Ophiopogon, of the family Convallariaceae ( Liliaceae), characterized by grasslike leaves, small, bell-shaped flowers, and dark berries; esp. Ophiopogon japonicus, native to Japan and Korea and increasingly grown as a carpeting plant.
