Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French monème.
Etymology: < French monème (1941) < mono- mono- comb. form + -ème -eme suffix, after morphème morpheme n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives only the pronunciation (mǫ·nīm) /ˈmɒniːm/.
