Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; apparently modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek μονο- , ἔργον , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + ἔργον work (see erg n.1) + -ist suffix, apparently after German Monergismus monergism n. Compare monergistic adj. and later monergism n. In quot. 1898 at sense B. translating German monergistisch (see monergistic adj.).
Theology. rare.
