Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -merous comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -merous comb. form, after French monomère (P. A. Latreille in Cuvier Règne animal (1817) III. 365, as noun denoting a beetle with tarsi composed of a single segment, 1840 as adjective). Compare Hellenistic Greek μονομερής (of philosophy) consisting of one part (Sextus Empiricus), (of a kind of bandage) for one side (Galen) < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + μέρος part (see mero- comb. form1). Compare dimerous adj., trimerous adj., tetramerous adj., pentamerous adj.
1. Entomology. Of a part of an insect: not visibly divided into segments, or consisting of only one segment. Of an insect: characterized by such segmentation. Obsolete.
