Etymology: < mono- comb. form + nucleus n. + -osis suffix, after mononuclear adj. Compare French mononucléose (1901).
Medicine.
An abnormally high number of mononuclear leucocytes in the blood; lymphocytosis, monocytosis, or both. Later also: = infectious mononucleosis n. at infectious adj. Compounds; (also, chiefly with distinguishing word) any viral syndrome resembling this. Cf. mono n.5
