Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μονοϕάγος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μονοϕάγος that eats alone ( < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + -ϕάγος : see -phagous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French monophage (1874). Compare earlier monophagian n., monophague n., monophagy n., and also polyphagous adj.
Chiefly Zoology.
Esp. of an animal: that eats only one kind of food.
