Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mono- comb. form, -phone comb. form.
Etymology: < mono- comb. form + -phone comb. form. Compare ancient Greek μονόϕωνος with one voice or tone (see monophonous adj.), French monophone (1865 in sense 2). Compare earlier polyphone n.
1. A single unit of (animal) communication, resembling a monosyllable. Obsolete. rare.

1891 R. L. Garner in New Rev. Nov. 429 I have found it necessary to coin a new word to describe the character of their [sc. monkeys'] speech, and as each idea seems to be couched in a single word of one syllable and nearly, indeed of one letter, I have called it a monophone.

3. Phonetics. Originally, H. E. Palmer's name for: a phone or phoneme consisting of a single unit of sound. In later use more generally: a phone, as distinguished from speech units comprising more than one phone.
