单词 mohair
释义

mohairn.adj.

Brit. /ˈməʊhɛː/, U.S. /ˈmoʊˌhɛ(ə)r/
Forms: 1500s mocayare, 1500s mockaire, 1500s mokayre, 1500s moochary, 1600s mochaire, 1600s moehair, 1600s moehayre, 1600s mo-haire, 1600s mohaire, 1600s mohayr, 1600s moher, 1600s mowhayre, 1600s–1700s moyhair, 1600s– mohair, 1600s– mowhair.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Arabic. Probably partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Arabic muḵayyar; Italian mocaiaro.
Etymology: Ultimately < Arabic muḵayyar select, choice, passive participle of ḵayyara prefer; probably partly via Italian mocaiaro (16th cent.: see mockado n.1). Arabic muḵayyar may have been used colloquially as a noun meaning ‘wool of prime quality’, short for a phrase in which the participle modified the noun ṣūf wool, although direct attestation is lacking.Forms in -hair , -haire , -hayr , -hayre are probably due to association with hair n. Italian mocaiaro was early applied to textile fabrics of different material (see mockado n.1; compare also discussion of Middle French moucayart , moucayard s.v.); compare also German †Macheier (16th cent.). In the 17th cent. the English word was borrowed into French as moire (see moire n.1).
A. n.
1. A fabric or yarn made from the hair of the Angora goat, typically mixed with wool, cotton, etc. Also: an imitation of this made with silk, wool, or cotton.Depending on the mixture of hairs and fibres and how they are spun or woven, mohair can be either smooth and strong or silky and fluffy (the latter being the more usual modern form).
